Face Recognition

Look at the mobile, and it will unlock.
Touch it, with finger, and same old.
Shout 'Hey Google' and it will work.

What next?

Will you kiss it too?
Like a lover, in a mall.
When both study each other
Down to each eye movements.

You tell each other your secrets,

And promise to keep it so,
And in the nights,
When you stare at each other
With blank eyes
Holding its face with both hands
Is it love? Or just Utility?

And what if one distant day,

You realize,
You don't want to be together anymore.
You replace it, with someone new.

And it just lies in a corner,

Or maybe switch owner.
And then you will meet again,
One day perhaps
By chance or mishaps
And you will recognize it.
But the question is, will it recognize you?

  1. Some verses have the ability to make you introspect, go down the memory lane, evaluate your life and discover new perspectives. "Face Recognition" turned out to be that very opportunity for me to reflect upon the dynamics of the capitalist society which functions upon the logic of commodification and utility and its startling parallel with relationships. Love is no longer unconditional but functional, and partners are replaceable, like substitute goods. So, where should I place myself in such a logically arranged world where my sentiment may not serve any utilitarian function. Will I be recognised? More power to the poet.

    1. Thanks Vini, And That's what Poets live for, to stir the feelings in other about the problems of the world. Technology do seems to have made us more utilitarian in nature. The spirit behind the poem may be summed up in a quote i read some time ago

"People were made to be love, and things were made to be use...
The problem of our world is, we love things, and use people"
